In liposomal supplement manufacturing, ultra-pure water is essential to ensure product stability, safety, and effectiveness. One of the key steps in achieving this high level of water purity is the use of deionised water (DI water).

Deionised water is created by removing the mineral ions (such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate and carbonate) that are commonly found in tap or distilled water. This is typically done using ion exchange resins, which attract and trap positively and negatively charged particles (ions). The process involves passing water through a mixed-bed resin or through sequential cation and anion exchange columns, which exchange undesirable ions for hydrogen (H⁺) and hydroxide (OH⁻) ions. These combine to form pure water (H₂O) as the by-product.

While deionisation removes charged particles, it does not eliminate organic contaminants, bacteria, or particulates.
