Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is the natural form of vitamin D that your body produces when your skin is exposed to sunlight, specifically UVB rays.

In the UK, sunlight from October to March is insufficient for vitamin D production. Consequently, around 23-29% of adults aged 19-64 years old and 21-29% of adults aged 65 years and older have vitamin D levels below 25 nmol/L indicating a deficiency.

Vitamin D3 is considered the most effective and bioavailable form of vitamin D for supplementation.

Ultra Pure Water

In liposomal supplement manufacturing, ultra-pure water is essential to ensure product stability, safety, and effectiveness. One of the key steps in achieving this high level of water purity is the use of deionised water (DI water).

Deionised water is created by removing the mineral ions (such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate and carbonate) that are commonly found in tap or distilled water. This is typically done using ion exchange resins, which attract and trap positively and negatively charged particles (ions). The process involves passing water through a mixed-bed resin or through sequential cation and anion exchange columns, which exchange undesirable ions for hydrogen (H⁺) and hydroxide (OH⁻) ions. These combine to form pure water (H₂O) as the by-product.

While deionisation removes charged particles, it does not eliminate organic contaminants, bacteria, or particulates.

For this reason, SAIFx® Technology used in lipolife® formulations takes it a step further to achieve ultra-pure water by integrating additional purification steps. The resulting ultra-pure water is chemically neutral and microbiologically clean, which is crucial for liposomal formulations. Any impurities, especially ions or microbes, could compromise the integrity of the phospholipid bilayers that form liposomes, affect shelf stability, or introduce contamination into the final product.

The UK Government therefore advises taking a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms in wintertime as we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight between October-March, in order to help keep bones and muscles healthy.

How do I boost my vitamin D?

Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to UVB rays from sunlight. Aim for 10–30 minutes of midday sun a few times a week, depending on your skin tone, age and where you live. In the UK, this is most effective between April and September. Foods rich in vitamin D include oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), egg yolks, red meat, liver and fortified foods such as cereals, plant-based milks, and spreads.
Taking a vitamin D supplement, especially during autumn and winter months or if you get little sun, can help maintain healthy levels. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the most effective form and liposomal D3 can improve absorption.
