Dietary iron exists in two forms: heme iron, found in animal products like red meat and poultry, and non-heme iron, found in plant foods such as legumes, spinach and fortified cereals. While non-heme iron is more common in the diet, it is not as readily absorbed as heme iron, making supplementation a helpful option for those at risk of deficiency.

Iron - ferrous fumarate

Ferrous fumarate is a form of non-heme iron that’s well absorbed by the body (especially when taken with vitamin C). It's clinically proven to increase haemoglobin levels and treat iron-deficiency anaemia effectively.

Ferrous fumarate contains about 33% elemental iron, which is higher than ferrous sulfate and many other iron salts. This means a therapeutic dose can be achieved with a smaller dose of liquid.

Is it OK to take iron everyday?

It's generally acceptable to take iron every day, but it depends on your individual needs and health status. If you’ve been diagnosed with iron deficiency or anaemia, your doctor may recommend daily supplementation so it's important to follow their instructions. Menstruating women, pregnant individuals, vegans/vegetarians or those with poor dietary intake of iron may benefit from regular low-dose iron. The upper tolerable daily intake is 45mg per day.

You should remain mindful of taking iron daily without checking if your levels are actually low — unnecessary iron can build up and this presents its own health complications.

What should you avoid when taking iron pills?

You should take car to avoid taking iron with tea and coffee as they contain tannins and polyphenols that block iron absorption. Wait at least 1–2 hours before or after your supplement.

You should also space out calcium-rich foods or supplements as calcium competes with iron for absorption. This includes things like antacids. Whole grains and bran can reduce iron uptake so try not to take your iron dose with your morning cereal.

What are the signs of a lack of iron?

The only way to confirm iron deficiency is with a blood test — typically measuring ferritin (your iron stores), haemoglobin and other markers.

Common Symptoms of Iron Deficiency:

1. Tiredness or Fatigue - You feel drained even after a good night’s sleep.
2. Pale Skin or Pale Inner Eyelids - Your complexion may look washed out, especially on the face or inside the lower eyelids.
3. Shortness of Breath or Dizziness - Even mild activity can leave you out of breath or light-headed.
4. Cold Hands and Feet - Poor circulation due to low haemoglobin levels.
5. Headaches - Caused by less oxygen reaching the brain.
6. Heart Palpitations - A fast or irregular heartbeat, especially with exertion.
7. Cracks at the Corners of the Mouth / Sore Tongue - Known as angular cheilitis; also a smooth, swollen tongue can occur.
8. Brittle Nails or Hair Loss - Nails may become thin or spoon-shaped; more hair in the brush than usual.
9. Restless Legs - A strong urge to move your legs, especially at night — often linked to low iron.
10. Unusual Cravings (Pica) - Craving ice, clay, chalk or other non-food items.
