Liposomal Vitamin C

Liposomal Vitamin C vs Regular Vitamin C

      What is Liposomal Vitamin C:

To improve the bioavailability and absorption of Vitamin C, a technology called Liposomal Encapsulation Technology (LET) has been developed. Liposomal Encapsulation Technology (LET) is the process of filling tiny bubbles called liposomes with hydrophobic or hydrophilic substances like Vitamin C. In other words, Vitamin C is encapsulated in liposomes, which then protect the nutrient until it enters circulation and is delivered to the cells.

Is liposomal Vitamin C really better?

The most significant advantage of Liposomal Vitamin C is its superior bioavailability compared to standard sources of Vitamin C, including traditional Vitamin C supplements. Several human trials have demonstrated greater bioavailability of Vitamin C when delivered via liposomes compared to unencapsulated Vitamin C [1].

What are the limits of traditional Vitamin C supplements?

The most significant limitation of traditional oral Vitamin C supplements is their inferior bioavailability and low absorption. Bioavailability simply means the proportion of drugs or substances which enter the circulation when introduced into the body so is able to have an active effect.

Vitamin C benefits:

Vitamin C has several important biological roles.

They include:

          ·         Collagen synthesis and wound healing.

          ·      Supporting the normal functioning of the immune system

          ·        Supporting the normal functioning of the nervous system

          ·        Maintaining bone homeostasis

        ·        Free radical scavenging

An insufficient amount of vitamin C in our diet will induce Vitamin C deficiency, which can lead to scurvy. When dietary intake of Vitamin C is inadequate, initial deficiency symptoms can occur within a month. These signs include fatigue, loss of appetite, and generally feeling unwell.

It is important to understand that Vitamin C cannot be synthesized endogenously and thus is an essential nutrient that must be consumed regularly in sufficient amounts. Good sources of Vitamin C include fruit and vegetables like oranges, strawberries, broccoli, red peppers, brussels sprouts, and potatoes are good sources of this water-soluble vitamin. Although it is commonly advised we meet our Vitamin C requirements through a balanced diet, much of this important nutrient will be lost through the process of cooking and storage. In fact, Vitamin C is one of the most unstable nutrients. When fruit and vegetables rich in Vitamin C are exposed to air, light, and are cooked, they can suffer a significant reduction in nutrients. In addition to that, there are many people who don't consume enough (more than 5 servings) of fruit and vegetables a day to get closer to the 200mg mark which our bodies need. Having a daily intake of a dietary supplement of Vitamin C is thus a good way to help meet our need for Vitamin C. However, traditional oral Vitamin C supplements have some limits.
